Les capteurs à barrette sont devenus la règle pour tous les détecteurs aéroportés ou satellitaires modernes dans le visible et le proche infrarouge. On les retrouve [notamment] sur le capteur aéroporté canadien MEIS-II. Ces capteurs peuvent utiliser plusieurs barrettes dont chacune vise une bande spectrale particulière. Dans le moyen infrarouge et l'infrarouge thermique, la miniaturisation difficile et la nécessité du contrôle individuel de la température des détecteurs limitent cependant leur utilisation et l'on emploie donc plûtot des capteurs à balayage mécanique dans ces régions spectrales.
