Le chancre se définit comme une partie d'écorce morte sur le tronc, celle-ci étant souvent entourée d'un bourrelet ou calus. Sur l'érable à sucre, le chancre eutypelléen, causé par le champignon Eutypella parasitica et le chancre nectrien, causé par Nectria galligena sont les deux principaux, le second étant beaucoup moins commun que le premier.
