Ce terme s'est généralisé avec le développement de la navigation vers 1860. Longtemps utilisé pour toutes sortes de marchandises, le cargo est de plus en plus spécialisé en fonction des exigences techniques et économiques du transport: cargo climatisé pour recevoir les denrées périssables (frigorifique ou polytherme), porte-conteneurs, porte barges pour les charges unitisées, roulier. La silhouette du cargo moderne est marquée par sa spécialité.
