Il y a deux types de poêles à bois d'usage courant. Le poêle à chaleur rayonnante transmet la chaleur à l'espace environnant par radiation directe de la chaleur de sa surface très chaude. Dans le cas du poêle à flux de chaleur, la surface chaude est recouverte d'une enveloppe de métal et des orifices pour la circulation de l'air chaud sont aménagés sur le dessus et au bas de l'appareil. L'air chaud circule par convection naturelle ou est poussé par un éventail.
