La famille des hydrocarbures compte un nombre considérable de corps présentant des conformations chimiques différentes. Suivant la forme prise par la chaîne carbonée, on distingue au premier ordre les hydrocarbures acycliques et les hydrocarbures cycliques. [...] Les hydrocarbures cycliques sont des composés dont la molécule comporte au minimum trois atomes de carbone liés entre eux et formant une chaîne fermée sur elle-même. Les cycles ainsi formés peuvent être simples, juxtaposés, enchevêtrés dans le plan et dans l'espace.
