Defective fuel (fuel from which fission products can escape) can be removed as soon as it is discovered. This helps lower the radiation dose to station staff. Coolant may contain fission products from failed fuel and activated corrosion products.

Le combustible défectueux (combustible duquel des produits de fission peuvent s'échapper) peut être enlevé dès que l'on constate sa défaillance. Cela permet de réduire au minimum la dose de rayonnement au personnel de centrale. Le caloporteur peut contenir des produits de fission provenant du combustible défectueux et des produits de corrosion rendus radioactifs. Le combustible brisé laisse s'échapper des matières radioactives. Pour que le réacteur fonctionne de façon sûre et économique, le combustible doit être bien conçu et bien fabriqué.
