Reverted in 1971 to Department of Education which absorbed the former Department of Continuing Education and Manpower in April 1, 1978. Name changed in 1984 from Department of Education to Manitoba Education. In 1989 name changed from Manitoba Education to Manitoba Education and Training also known as Department of Education and Training.

Department of Education was established by assent on May 13, 1950 (prior to this time known as the Bureau of Education). Name changed August 11, 1970 to Department of Education and Youth, and reverted to Department of Education on April 1, 1973. Name changed in 1994 to Department of Education and Training.

The Department of Education is a dynamic organization charged with the responsibility for providing the enabling structures for the education of over 81,000 students in the K-12 system, as well as the post-secondary system. The department also encourages and promotes lifelong learning for all of the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador. The mandate of the Department of Education is built around the following mission statement: To provide an affordable, high quality education to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians so that they are able to acquire - through lifelong learning - the knowledge, skills and values necessary for personal growth and the development of society.
