In dry drowning the glottis spasms and prevents water from passing into the lungs. The lungs of the dry drowning victims are usually normal.

La noyade sèche désigne en fait une mort par noyade, mais où il n'y a pas d'eau dans les poumons de la victime [...] C'est une situation qui survient lorsque le larynx se referme (un laryngospasme) en réaction à l'inhalation d'eau, mais qui, ce faisant, empêche l'oxygène de monter au cerveau. Dans ce cas, la mort survient dans les minutes qui suivent.
