[Le] phylum des "Elasmobranchii" [renferme] les Arthrodires et les Antriarches, rangés souvent sous le nom de "Poissons cuirassés" ou "Placodermes", et localisés dans le Dévonien. Quelques Arthrodires offrent d'étroites ressemblances avec les Elasmobranches, qui appartiennent ainsi à ce même phylum.

Encore appelés "Elasmobranches", les Chondrichthyens groupent, pour les formes actuelles, les "Sélaciens" et les "Holocéphales".
