A complex process established to ensure that an environmental evaluation is carried out for all projects which may have an adverse effect on the environment; the results of this evaluation are used in planning, decision-making and implementation.

The environmental assessment and review process consists of four stages: preliminary screening, screening, initial environmental evaluation and environmental impact statement.

It should be noted that the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process has been superceded since the writing of the Federal Policy on Wetland Conservation by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, passed June 1992.

Il est à noter qu'après la rédaction de la Politique fédérale sur la conservation des terres humides, le Processus fédéral d'évaluation et d'examen en matière d'environnement a été remplacé par la Loi canadienne sur l'évaluation environnementale, adoptée en juin 1992.
