DEF

A form of facsimile designed for the transmission of documents other than photographs, which does not guarantee faithful reproduction of the density scale (i.e. shades of gray) of the original.

OBS

Most document facsimile systems in use today are digital systems that only distinguish between black and white picture elements, but some offer optional coding schemes allowing shades of gray to be reproduced to some degree by means of clusters of pels and thereby provide a limited capability for transmitting pictures. See halftone transmission.

OBS

Document facsimile is often designated by the broader terms "facsimile" and "facsimile transmission" since its counterpart, photographic facsimile (1135), is used only in highly specialized applications.
