A recess in an external wall, having the external appearance of a window.

The elements of a window (the surround, mullion, etc.) applied to a wall without any aperture. It was used as a decorative device and is found from the Middle Ages onwards. It was often used in later periods to give symmetry to the façade of an asymmetrically planned building.
