La excesiva lipogénesis provoca la degeneración grasa del hígado (hígado aumentado de tamaño y de color amarillento) debido a que se supera la capacidad de transporte de lípidos en el plasma, por lo que la grasa se deposita en el hígado. Las gallinas con hígado graso, además de reducir la puesta, son muy susceptibles al estrés, siendo la mortalidad relativamente alta. Este trastorno es relativamente frecuente en ponedoras morenas obesas, y en épocas de calor.
