Une maladie héréditaire, liée à un déficit en glucose 6 phosphate deshydrogénase, peut déclencher une amoxie. Elle est surtout fréquente dans le bassin méditerranéen. On lui a donné le nom de favisme car l'anoxie peut être déclenchée par l'ingestion de fèves; on observe une anémie aiguë par hémolyse (irruption de l'hémoglobine dans le plasma).
