Toute abatteuse qui laisse tomber les arbres un à un sans les soulever oriente d'une certaine façon leur direction de chute, même si ce n'est que par la position ou la forme de la lame. Si on lui ajoute en plus un dispositif spécial d'orientation, on peut en tenir compte dans l'appellation de la machine (par exemple, abatteuse à bras directeur).

Les abatteuses peuvent être dérivées de chargeuses frontales, de pelles hydrauliques ou de tracteurs à châssis articulé.
