The YF-16 prototype fitted with two canards under the intake duct proved the basic ability to shift the aircraft sideways or up and down in flight without changing its fuselage attitude (direct force control) and pointing the fuselage up, down or sideways without altering its flight path (fuselage aiming or pointing).

Le prototype YF-16 à commandes automatiques généralisées et avec empennage canard monté au-dessous de l'entrée d'air, a démontré qu'il était possible de modifier la trajectoire d'un avion (vers le haut, vers le bas, vers la droite ou vers la gauche) sans modifier son attitude (c'est le "contrôle direct des forces"), et de changer le cap ou l'assiette en conservant la même trajectoire (c'est le "dépointage" de la ligne de foi du fuselage par rapport à la trajectoire de vol.
