Record 1 2017-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Management
  • Geology
DEF

... branch of applied geology [which] seeks to explain the geological factors in the present environment and how they can be used or modified to man's greatest advantage. It also seeks to predict man's effect on the environment through increases in population, urbanization, waste disposal, and so forth. For example, there is an increasing withdrawal of groundwater for domestic use, manufacturing, and agriculture. These withdrawals may have adverse effects on groundwater levels, streamflow, and water quality ... Environmental geology is the most "people-centered" of all branches of geology.

OBS

Environmental geology is a relatively new variety of geoscience that is strongly associated with geotechnics and with the use of mineral resources.

OBS

The terms engineering geology and environmental geology often seem to be used interchangeably ... Another relevant term is geotechnics ...

OBS

"Geotechnics", "engineering geology", "environmental geology", and "soil mechanics" are closely related terms and can almost be used as synonyms. Few or no obvious distinction between them results in ambiguity of use and risk of misunderstanding. Confronted with the situation the terminologist chose to treat them as separate concepts till their use is clarified by usage.
