The Global Environmental Epidemiology Network (GEENET) was established in 1987 as part of a WHO initiative to create networks of professionals working on the health effects of environmental hazards and human exposure, pollution control technology, and environmental management and planning. Specifically, GEENET aims to increase the national capacity of developing countries to secure environmental health by strengthening education, training and applied research in environmental epidemiology.

Fondé en 1987, [le Réseau global d'épidémiologie environnementale] répond à une initiative de l'OMS de créer des réseaux de professionnels chargés d'étudier les effets qu'ont sur la santé les risques environnementaux et l'exposition aux polluants, les techniques de contrôle de la pollution ainsi que la gestion et la planification environnementales. Il vise tout particulièrement à mieux habiliter les pays en développement à protéger la santé environnementale en renforçant l'éducation, la formation et la recherche appliquée en matière d'épidémiologie environnementale.
