Gravity gradient stabilisation uses the principle that a body in orbit around the Earth will tend to rotate about it's centre of mass, as each part of the body will tend to follow it's own orbit. La stabilisation par gradient de gravité, consiste à placer une masse liée à une altitude légèrement supérieure en utilisant le fait qu'à cet endroit, la force centrifuge est légèrement supérieure à l'attraction terrestre (et inversement pour une distance moindre). La station est sur une orbite autour de la terre située entre 350 km et 420 km d'altitude, inclinée de 51,6 degrés par rapport à l'équateur terrestre, et accompli un tour complet de la planète en 91 minutes, ce qui représente une vitesse de vingt sept mille kilomètres par heure.
