Application des tensions et des influences exercées entre des masses qualifiées; son usage a contribué à éclairer de manière élémentaire les normes de distribution des populations et des activités. Ce modèle est fondé sur la loi de Reilly, appelée aussi loi gravitaire (ou loi de gravitation). Cette loi est utilisée pour l'étude de la concurrence dans le commerce de détail et pour déterminer l'aire d'influence urbaine. Elle fut ensuite étendue à l'analyse du trafic et au phénomène de l'effet de détournement du commerce international.
