Les données sont transmises à ces stations de réception par les satellites au moment de leur passage au-dessus de la station dans un rayon dont la grandeur dépend de la localisation et de la capacité des organes de contrôle de l'antenne et de traitement des données reçues. En général, l'angle minimal de pointage de l'antenne au-dessus de l'horizon est de 5°, ce qui correspond à un rayon d'environ 2 000 kilomètres pour un satellite en orbite à une altitude de 900 kilomètres environ. Les données captées par la station sont immédiatement stockées sur des rubans magnétiques à haute densité.
