Découverte indépendamment par Nissl et Robertson, la cellule microgliale a été étudiée plus en détail par Del Rio Hortega dès le début du 20è siècle. [...] Issue de la lignée des macrophages, la microglie est activée au cours de diverses atteintes du système nerveux central : ischémies, lésions, maladies autoimmunes et neurodégénératives, infections virales. Elle participe alors à la défense du tissu cérébral et à la réaction inflammatoire, assurant des fonctions immunes telles que l'élimination des débris cellulaires par phagocytose,la présentation de l'antigène et la sécrétion de différents facteurs trophiques ou toxiques comme les cytokines, les facteurs de croissance ou les radicaux libres. 1, record 1, French, - microglie
