La clonación con fines reproductivos puede tener aplicaciones mediatas como creación de seres humanos con diferentes fines: obtención de descendencia en parejas estériles, realizar fotocopias genéticas de seres queridos desaparecidos y crear personas útiles a la sociedad por su capacidad intelectual o moral, seres humanos de gran resistencia física para trabajos de baja intelectualidad, entre otras.

Además del proyecto costarricense, coauspiciado por Estados Unidos, Italia, Portugal y varios países africanos, se ha presentado otro texto que prohibe solamente la clonación humana con fines reproductivos pero deja librado a cada Estado la decisión sobre la clonación terapéutica.
