[...] le globe terrestre dans son ensemble baigne dans un plasma, c'est-à-dire un milieu qui, bien que globalement neutre, se trouve composé en majorité ou en totalité de particules ionisées et d'électrons libres : les milieux de ce genre représentent en fait un état bien particulier de la matière, où les particules peuvent manifester un comportement collectif; c'est le vent solaire, essentiellement constitué d'un flux de protons et d'électrons émis par le Soleil, qui constitue ce plasma interplanétaire avec lequel interfèrent les régions de la haute atmosphère à partir de 100 km d'altitude environ.
