English

Subject field(s)
  • Vulcanology and Seismology
  • Geophysics
  • Surveillance, Detection and Reconnaissance (Military)
DEF

That type of seismic body wave that involves particle motion (alternating compression and expansion) in the direction of propagation.

OBS

The fastest of seismic waves, these compressional waves are the first recorded by the seismographs and have a cycle of about one second. These are higher frequency body waves that are felt by humans and cause damage.

OBS

compressional wave; longitudinal wave; primary; P-Wave: terms extracted from the "Disarmament and Peace Keeping" glossary with the permission of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Volcanologie et sismologie
  • Géophysique
  • Surveillance, détection et reconnaissance (Militaire)
DEF

Record 2 2002-11-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radio Waves
  • Acoustics (Physics)
DEF

Normal propagating sound wave in which the motions of the relevant particles are in line with the direction of translation of energy.

CONT

Sound in air propagates as a longitudinal wave.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Ondes radioélectriques
  • Acoustique (Physique)
DEF
