Le Québec a un panier d'épicerie qui ne coûte pas cher. Une comparaison du prix d'un panier d'épicerie dans quelques grandes villes du monde, faite en mars 1998, a montré que Montréal se classe très bien. Ce panier contient une douzaine de pommes, 4,5 kg de pommes de terre et 908 g de carottes. Un tel panier coûte 7,14 $ CAN à Montréal, 5,65 $ à Washington, 12,72 $ à Paris, 14,69 $ à Sydney et 17,02 $ à Londres.
