Mountain Zebra. More donkey-like in appearance. Numerous narrow black stripes, white belly, a series of narrow stripes across the rump in grid-iron pattern. A distinctive dewlap of skin below the throat. Long pointed ears. Shoulder height: 120-130 cm (47-51 in). Weight: 227-318 kg (550-600 lbs).

Le zèbre de montagne, Equus zebra, vit, lui, dans les prairies d'altitude. Son pelage est plus lisse que celui [du zèbre de plaine], ses rayures sont plus étroites et son ventre est blanc. Le haut de sa queue est ornée d'un motif à petites rayures symétriques, qui permet de l'identifier aisément lorsqu'il est vu de la croupe. L'une des sous-espèces, Equus zebra zebra, vit en République sud-africaine dans les montagnes centrales de la province du Cap, l'autre, Equus hartmannae, le zèbre de Hartmann, se trouve en Angola et en Namibie.
