C'est Carl Rogers en 1942 qui développe aux États-Unis cette technique d'investigation scientifique qui tourne principalement autour de la notion «d'empathie». L'attitude non-directive se manifeste principalement à travers l'ensemble des conduites de l'interviewer qui visent à obtenir la production par l'interviewé d'un discours continu et structuré autour d'un problème et de son itinéraire, sans que ses dires puissent être vérifiés ou véritables (ou remis en doute) par l'enquêteur.
