Quand [un] rayon de lumière frappe, par exemple, un rhomboèdre de calcite ou spath d'Islande, aussi bien perpendiculairement qu'obliquement, il se divise en deux rayons. Un rayon, appelé "rayon ordinaire", se comporte comme si le cristal était isotrope, tandis que l'autre, appelé "rayon extraordinaire", dévie suivant des lois propres.
