How fast the universe is currently expanding and how strongly the force of gravity, determined by the average density of mass within the universe, holds that mass together ... According to the general theory of relativity, there is a relation between the magnitudes of these two factors and the mean curvature of the universe ... If the average mass density is high enough to halt the expansion and cause the universe to contract again, the universe is said to be closed. If the density is so small compared with the expansion rate that the universe will continue to expand at a finite rate forever, the universe is said to be open.

Univers plat, fermé ou ouvert? On pourra prédire la destinée de l'Univers si l'on arrive à déterminer la quantité exacte de matière qu'il contient. Si la masse contenue dans l'Univers entier était tout juste égale à une certaine masse dite critique, la force gravitationnelle engendrée pourrait éventuellement contrebalancer la poussée expansionniste et simplement mettre fin à l'expansion : on aurait alors un Univers plat. [...] Si la masse de l'Univers était inférieure à la masse critique, l'expansion ne prendrait jamais fin.
