Dans certaines séparations on utilise les échangeurs d'ions inorganiques tels que le phosphate de zirconyle. Ces échangeurs d'ions, synthétiques ou naturels (montmorillonite, zéolithe) ont une certaine importance car ils subissent moins les dommages des radiations que les échangeurs organiques dans le cas de solutions radioactives de haute activité.
