Le carbonate de calcium peut se fixer soit dans les coquilles elles-mêmes, ce qui est le cas général, soit être précipité par l'action de ces organismes. Certains animaux ou même certains végétaux [...] peuvent utiliser le carbonate de calcium pour former leur squelette. [...] C'est tantôt la calcite qui est fixée, - cas, semble-t-il, le plus fréquent, - tantôt l'aragonite, tantôt les deux à la fois. Mais, l'aragonite étant instable, on ne la trouve pas préservée dans les calcaires anciens; elle recristallise en calcite, amenant ainsi une destruction de la structure initiale.
