En 1988, un grand nombre de phoques (Phoca vitulina) morts ont été retrouvés échoués sur les côtes d'Europe du Nord. Un morbillivirus (genre qui comprend le virus de la rougeole ou encore celui de la maladie de Carré chez le chien) a été isolé chez ces animaux contaminés par l'intermédiaire de visons d'élevage et nommé morbillivirus du phoque.
