Si vous percez des avant-trous, vos vis ne fendront pas le bois comme le font souvent les clous. Quand on assemble deux pièces de bois avec une vis, l'avant-trou de la première pièce sort au fût de la vis, et celui-ci reste libre dans cet avant-trou. L'avant-trou doit être assez petit pour que les filets mordent fermement dans le bois, mais pas trop, car autrement, la vis ne réunira pas les deux morceaux assez serrés.
