The process consultant directly observes people in action and conducts interviews with management personnel from the president down; the purpose is to obtain facts and report the data to the client system in order to improve organizational relationships and processes. The process consultant must be able to effectively diagnose who and what is hindering organizational effectiveness and to report these observations to the appropriate person or persons in the organization.

Dans ce cas, le conseil essaie, en tant qu'agent de changement, d'aider l'entreprise à résoudre ses propres problèmes en lui faisant prendre conscience des processus qui se déroulent au sein de l'organisation, de leurs conséquences probables et des techniques destinées à réaliser le changement. Par opposition avec le consultant "fournisseur" qui se préoccupe d'abord de transmettre ses connaissances et de résoudre les problèmes, le "catalyseur" transmet son approche, ses méthodes et ses normes de valeurs pour permettre à l'entreprise elle-même d'établir des diagnostics et d'apporter des remèdes à ses propres problèmes.
