On parle d'aciers dont les caractéristiques sont aussi proches que possible de celles que recherche la fusion, c'est-à-dire des aciers martensitiques avec, en particulier comme élément allié, de 8 à 12 % de chrome [...] au niobium autre élément allié des aciers martensitiques, on substitue le vanadium, le titane ou le tantale. Dans ces substitutions, on gagne toujours un facteur important (cent ou mille) sur l'activation spécifique déterminée à cent ans et exprimée en becquerels par kilogramme. En conséquence et de façon globale cette fois, l'activité résiduelle à cent ans d'un tel acier est cent fois plus faible que celle d'un acier austénitique classique. On parlera donc d'acier à activation réduite.
