Headaches, drowsiness, eye irritations, sore throats? ... Well it is for thousands of office employees who work in sealed buildings where sufficient amounts of fresh air cannot enter. These workers are suffering from what is most often referred to as the "tight building syndrome."

Depuis le début de la décennie [années 1980], l'augmentation du nombre de plaintes relatives à la qualité de l'air et à la ventilation dans les édifices à bureaux préoccupe les occupants. Il s'agit de plaintes liées au confort et à la santé, telles que irritation des yeux, du nez ou de la gorge, fatigue mentale, maux de tête ou encore hypersensibilité non spécifique. Cet ensemble de symptômes connus sous le nom de «Syndrome des édifices hermétiques» surviendrait surtout dans des édifices construits ou rénovés au cours des 15 dernières années.

Syndrome le plus fréquent du syndrome plus général désigné par le terme de «syndrome des bâtiments malsains» (en anglais : «sick building syndrome»). Le terme général «bâtiment» est préférable à celui d'«édifice», ce dernier possédant une connotation de construction importante, de grandes dimensions, et, souvent, dont les qualités architecturales sont remarquables.
