L'eau forte est une technique très souple qui convient particulièrement aux peintres. Sur une plaque de cuivre bien décapée, sans graisse, on étend une mince couche de vernis protecteur; quand celui-ci est sec, on dessine sur la surface à l'aide d'une pointe emmanchée comme un crayon qui met ainsi le métal à nu [...] Pour obtenir des nuances ou pour effacer on préserve certaines parties en passant un vernis siccatif.
