À l'état fondamental, deux électrons situés dans la même orbitale sont dans un état singulet (les spins sont antiparallèles). Une transition électronique revient à retirer un électron d'une orbitale (n ou [pi]) pour le promouvoir dans une orbitale (généralement [pi]).
