Adult: 20 to 25 mm wingspan: brown head with 2 long labial palps directed anteriorly, forming a type of rostrum. Trapezoidal fore wings, straw yellow with 3 reddish brown transversal bands; uniformly slate grey and finely fringed hind wings.

Host plants: vines, Artemisia (Artemisia vulgaris), yellow bedstraw (Galium), bramble (Rubus), elm (Ulmus), hop, pear, plantain (Plantago), strawberry.

[The larva], once hatched, ... moves towards the trunk and takes shelter under the bark, in the support-stakes or under the grass inside a small silken cocoon, to hibernate. In spring, it eats the buds, then the young leaves at the extremity of the branches keeping them together with silk threads.

[La] chenille au 1er stade mesure 1,2 à 2 mm et atteint 30 mm à son complet développement. La tête et le prothorax sont brun noir brillant, le corps grisâtre, verdâtre ou rougeâtre avec de fines soies insérées sur des tubercules clairs.

Larve : sitôt éclose, elle se dirige vers la souche et s'abrite sous l'écorce des ceps, dans les piquets ou sous les herbes à l'intérieur d'un petit cocon soyeux, pour hiverner. Au printemps, elle dévore les bourgeons puis les jeunes feuilles de l'extrémité des rameaux en les maintenant groupés par des fils de soie. Elle s'attaque ensuite aux jeunes grappes. Elle mordille également le pédoncule des feuilles qui se dessèchent et prennent une teinte roussâtre.

Le terme «pyrale de la vigne» est utilisé en français pour désigner l'insecte ravageur quel que soit son stade (chenille ou papillon). Lorsqu'il s'agit de la chenille, on devrait plutôt parler de «tordeuse» et non de «pyrale».
