The main caisson or column rising from the floating hull of a semi-submersible drilling unit to support the deck. Modern semi-submersible rigs have three, four, five or six stabilizer columns, sometimes separated by narrower intermediate columns which help to distribute the load. Stabilizer columns are made of large diameter tubes to give strength and stability to the structure when submerged or resting on the water.

Les Pentagones, en particulier le P82 et le P84, sont des semi-submersibles dont les caractéristiques marines sont assez voisines. Leur architecture se compose d'un tablier supporté par cinq colonnes d'un diamètre de 8,5 mètres, dont l'extrémité inférieure comporte un ponton de 22 mètres de diamètre et 7,5 mètres de hauteur, qui assure la flottabilité de l'ensemble.

pile : Ce terme semble entouré d'une certaine confusion car il sert à désigner 3 notions différentes: sorte de pieux enfoncés profondément dans le sol marin et servant d'ancrage aux plates-formes de type treillis (anglais: «pile»), jambes des plates-formes autoélévatrices (anglais: «leg»), et colonnes qui supportent les plates-formes semi-submersibles (anglais: «column»).

The stabilizing is carried out by rectifying under pressure ... to obtain a ... cut between the fractions, so that only the undesired light components are eliminated. The rectifying installations are called stabilizers.
