A derrick that is built piece by piece at the drilling location as opposed to a jackknife mast, which is a portable, folding mast that is already assembled.

CONT

Standard derricks have been replaced almost totally by jackknife masts; however, in some deep drilling locations and on some offshore drilling rigs, they are still employed.
