Les études sur cet animal [...] ont révélé que les dauphins possèdent un système sonar qui leur permet de se guider sous l'eau par «écholocation». Ils perçoivent des vibrations acoustiques de fréquence égale ou même supérieure à 50 kHz, et, d'autre part, ils émettent une série de sons dans un spectre de fréquences compris entre 200 Hz et 150 kHz environ, ces sons étant soit des impulsions à front raide, d'une durée inférieure à la milliseconde (clics), soit des ondes presque complètement sinusoïdales (sifflements).
