Les images satellites à haute résolution, telles que Landsat Thematic Mapper, SPOT, Soyouz, ERS-SAR, RADARSAT et d'autres, offrent de nouvelles possibilités d'étude et de suivi des ressources naturelles. Comparées aux informations obtenues par les méthodes traditionnelles, ces données offrent plusieurs avantages : elles fournissent une couverture synoptique et donnent donc une vue exhaustive de vastes étendues en même temps (de 3 600 à 34 000 km² sur une image, selon le type de satellite).
