On associe la modélisation du territoire obtenue par cette approche à un objet mathématique appelé graphe orienté : il s'agit d'un ensemble de nœuds (des points dans le plan, par exemple) reliés entre eux par des flèches indiquant un sens de parcours, les arcs. Les zones seront alors associées aux nœuds du graphe, tandis que les axes du réseau seront assimilés à ses arcs.
