The concentration to which workers can be exposed continuously for a short period of time without suffering from irritation, chronic or irreversible tissue change, or narcosis of sufficient degree to increase the likelihood of accidental injury, impair self-rescue or materially reduce work efficiency, and provided that the daily TLV-TWA also is not exceeded.

L'abréviation TLV-STEL tient lieu des mots Threshold Limit Values - Short Term Exposure Limit (Adaptation française : VLE-Très courte durée). Il s'agit de la concentration maximale à laquelle les travailleurs peuvent être exposés de façon continue, pour une période allant jusqu'à 15 minutes, sans éprouver l'une des affections suivantes : - une irritation; - une modification chronique ou irréversible des tissus; - une narcose [...]. Cette définition est valable à condition : 1) de ne pas autoriser plus de quatre dépassements par jour; 2) d'imposer un délai d'au moins 60 minutes entre ces périodes d'exposition; 3) de ne pas dépasser les valeurs [...] TLV-TWA. Cette valeur dite TLV-STEL est donc une valeur plafond [...]
