Imaginons un électron lancé contre un mur. Si le mur est épais, l'électron rebondit, ce qui paraît normal. Mais l'électron est quantique et se comporte comme une onde. Si le mur est très fin, l'électron peut se retrouver des deux côtés du mur à la fois, ce qui parfois lui permet de passer au travers. C'est l'effet tunnel, un des effets au cœur des nanosciences.
