When the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) was formed in 1948, the initial purpose was to observe the truce established in Palestine between the newly created state of Israel and its Arab neighbours. UNTSO currently assists other UN missions in the Middle East to monitor a number of truces and ceasefire arrangements. Observer groups are stationed in Egypt, on the Golan Heights, in southern Lebanon and in Beirut, and in Syria.

Le but premier de l'Organisme des Nations Unies chargé de la surveillance de la trève, établie en 1948, était d'observer la trêve établie en Palestine entre l'État nouvellement créé d'Israël et ses voisins arabes. L'ONUST appuie actuellement d'autres missions de l'ONU au Moyen-Orient pour superviser l'application de divers accords de trêve et de cessez-le-feu. Des groupes d'observateurs sont postés en Égypte, sur le plateau du Golan, dans le sud du Liban et à Beyrouth ainsi qu'en Syrie.
