The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) was created by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1970 to serve as an operational partner in development cooperation at the request of UN member states. It is unique within the UN family and as an international volunteer undertaking. It reports to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and works through UNDP's country offices around the world.

Le programme des Volontaires des Nations Unies (VNU), créé en 1970 par l'Assemblée générale en tant qu'organe subsidiaire de l'ONU, est un programme opérationnel qui intervient dans des activités de coopération en faveur du développement. Il est unique en son genre en tant que «bras bénévole» du système des Nations Unies et en raison de l'ampleur de ses activités d'organisme multilatéral de volontariat. Il encourage le monde du volontariat à contribuer au développement en privilégiant les activités communautaires; il cherche aussi à influencer les grandes options politiques afin d'obtenir des résultats durables. Le programme des VNU relève du Conseil d'administration du Programme des Nations Unies pour le développement (PNUD) et exerce ses activités par l'intermédiaire des bureaux du PNUD dans les divers pays du monde.
