[There are] four mechanisms by which volcanic forcing influences climate: [radiative forcing] due to aerosol-radiation interaction; differential (vertical or horizontal) heating, producing gradients and changes in circulation; interactions with other modes of circulation, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO); and ozone depletion with its effects on stratospheric heating, which depends on anthropogenic chlorine (stratospheric ozone would increase with a volcanic eruption under low-chlorine conditions).

Le forçage par le CO2 est le plus important contributeur au forçage anthropique au cours de l'ère industrielle. Ce forçage total provenant des activités humaines peut être comparé au forçage naturel provenant de la fluctuation des éruptions volcaniques et de l'irradiation solaire. Au cours de l'ère industrielle, des éruptions volcaniques irrégulières ont eu de brefs effets de refroidissement sur le climat mondial. La nature épisodique des éruptions volcaniques rend difficile une comparaison avec d'autres agents de forçage sur une échelle de temps d'un siècle.
